Mount Meru Trekking
Mt. Meru stands 14,980ft/4565m above the town of Arusha. Situated in the center of Arusha National Park, Meru is incredible to behold. Due to a volcanic explosion long ago, the crater is massive and surrounded by sheer cliff walls. Standing on the summit you will be able to look down upon the ash cone thousands of feet below. We offer 3 and 4 day climbs of this majestic mountain. Unlike Kilimanjaro, there are few crowds here, so we can climb in peace. accommodations are in large huts. Climbers must be accompanied by an armed park ranger to protect against any wildlife threats. We will employ porters and a cook for your group.
Mount Meru Climb – 4 Day 3 Night
After meeting the armed Park ranger to accompany us, and registering ourselves at Momella Gate (4,950ft/1500m), the climb then starts out in the grasslands of the lower slopes where we will encounter many animals, such asgiraffes, buffalos and warthogs. We then enter lush forest inhabited by bushbucks, red duikers, blue Skye’s monkeys, black & white colobus monkeys and several varieties of birds. Momella Gate to Miriakamba Huts (8,250ft/2,500m) Duration 3 – 4 hrs. Dinner & Overnight, Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast leave Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Huts (11,550ft/3,500m) Duration 4hrs, and along the way we will stop Mgongo wa Tembo (Elephant Ridge) viewpoint for lunch.
After getting to our camp and resting we will hike to the summit of Little Meru (12,573ft/3,810m) Duration 1hrs, which has spectacular views of Mt. Meru’s summit, and the sheer cliffs of the crater wall. As the sun sets behind us we can see the glaciers on Mt. Kilimanjaro. Dinner & Overnight Saddle Hut
Midnight leave Saddle Hut via Rhino Point (12,540ft/3,800m) to Meru Summit (14,980ft/4,565m) in order to see the sunrise from behind Mt. Kilimanjaro. We reach Rhino point (12,540ft/3,800m) after about 1 hr, then hike on the very narrow ridge of the crater to summit itself. The cliff walls here are sheer and thousands of feet high, so if the weather is bad we may not be able to continue. If the weather is clear, we will see the active volcano of Mt. Oldoinyo Lengai to the west, and below us the town of Arusha and the plains of the Maasai steppe. From the summit you will be able to see the ashcone far below in the crater. We then descend back to Saddle Hut from the summit, then to Miriakamba Hut (11,550ft/3500m) where we spend the night. Duration 8 to 10 hrs Dinner & Overnight Miriakamba Hut.
NOTE: We offer a 3 day climb which descends all the way to Momella Gate from the summit, thus omitting the last night on the mountain.
After breakfast leave Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate, (4,950ft/1500m) Duration 2 hrs, arrival by noon where we stop for picnic lunch and representation of certificates. Finally, we will have a drive back to Arusha by our vehicle(s) Where the Hot Shower will be waiting you
